Today we began to look at different theories used as a narrative structure within films. The example we looked at today was Todorov's theory.
Todorov proposed a basic structure for all narratives which involves three key stages.
He stated that films and programmes begin with an EQUILIBRIUM (a calm period).
This is then disrupted by a period of unsettlement called DISQUILIBRIUM.
Following this is a renewed state of peace and harmony and a NEW EQUILIBRIUM brings the chaos to an end.
This structure is only one of the many different narrative structures, however, probably most common in film and television programmes. This is most likely to be the narrative structure we choose for our 5-minute-film as horror films, generally, have one main event which is then settled by a resolution and a new equilibrium is introduced.
Despite this, we may decide to end our film on a 'cliff hanger' so I will make sure to research various other narrative techniques used in films and programmes.
Today we also wrote a plan on what were are going to email the council to see if we can film in an abandoned setting, such as the abandoned asylum 'Cane Hill'. Written below is what we have planned to email the council.
