Developing Critical Writing Skills for Essays

Continuing to develop our essay writing skills, we began to look at 'signifiers' within the short film 'Smashed'.  An example of a signifier within this film is the crumpled paper bag the girl holds at the beginning of the film.  The fact that the paper bag is crumpled signifies that she has had it for a while and it is causing her anguish as she picks it up and puts it back down again, without looking inside.

There were other signifiers we looked for throughout the short film and we wrote notes in order to include these in to our essay.

I found this helpful as it would make my essay grade increase.  In my essay so far, I have analysed just the technical terms, however, now I can explain what these technical terms signify and what the director was trying to codify and portray.
